Port St. Lucie began as a planned community in the late 1950s and grew into the largest city on the Treasure Coast. It spreads over a wide area west of U.S. 1, with the North Fork of the St. Lucie River winding through its middle. Most visitors arrive for one of three reasons: the Mets, golf or a stay with family, but the city has added parks and riverfront space that make it worth exploring on its own.
Clover Park, in the St. Lucie West area, is the spring training home of the New York Mets. Grapefruit League games fill February and March, and the St. Lucie Mets play minor league ball here through the summer. Nearby, PGA Village is a public golf complex with several courses and a learning center, and the Tradition community to the west has a town square with restaurants and a busy events lawn.
Along the North Fork, the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens cover about 20 acres of riverfront, with themed gardens, a butterfly area and walking paths. Next to them, The Port District, which opened in 2024, has turned a stretch of riverfront into a park with a boardwalk, a stage, an event lawn and a small history museum in the old Peacock Lodge. The city’s holiday light display and monthly river nights are held here.
For wilder country, Oxbow Eco-Center is a free county preserve of about 225 acres on the North Fork, with boardwalk trails through floodplain forest and a nature center. On the east side of the city, Savannas Preserve State Park protects a long chain of freshwater marshes, one of the largest such systems left on Florida’s southeast coast. Its trails are good for birding, though the park’s education center has been closed for renovation. In the wet season, parts of the marsh fill with water and the trails can flood, so the dry months from late fall to spring are the best time to hike.
